The Problem

Domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking are serious problems in theistock_000000291842xsmall_herprayers Choctaw 10 ½ county area.  The problem is most daunting for Native American women.

Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to be victims of domestic violence, 3.5 times more likely to be victims of sexual assault, and twice as likely to be stalked as any other ethnic group.
  • Intimate partner violence occurs in one out of every six couples.
  • Oklahoma ranks 10th nationally for the number of murdered females by males
  • Oklahoma’s rate of dating violence for 9th graders is more than three times the national average.
  • Child abuse is reported in 33-54% of families in which adult domestic violence occurs.
  • 17% of all Native American women will be stalked during their lifetime.
